As a result of their less than stellar athleticism and questionable decision making skills, my family doesn’t win legitimate awards too often. As a child I often received blue ribbons and certificates declaring that I had achieved the status of “Participant”..somewhat akin to the certificate awarded to Josh in “Searching for Bobby Fischer.”
Despite this, my mother managed to break free from the chains of mediocrity and was awarded a Community Spirit Award by KLAS in Las Vegas.
